"Fat" can mean different things to different people. Also younger
people often think they are overweight when they are not.

What you need to do would depend on how much weight you need to lose.

What does your daily diet currently consist of? Do you exercise regularly?

Have you discussed this with your parents?

Thanks for you're replies. i am fat i am 5 ft 3 and weigh 12st 5 so defininately fat. My diet at the mment is not good.I know it is bad and need to change it. Idon't generally have breakfast and I don't like school dinners so generally go to the shops with me mates and get crisps and chocolates and sometimes we get MacDonalds when me mates bf comes to see her in his car. At home we just help areselfs as Mum works in the evenings. Have spoken to mum and she says i shouldn't worry about my weight and lots of girls my age are fat and that it'll go when i gets older, but shes fat too. She says that diets are bad for teenagers is that right? She did say she would by me some health food but she won't stop buying the cakes and biscuits and stuff as she says its not fair on my brothers. I don't do much exercise i hate pe and make up every excuse i can to get out of it i do walk to school tho.

Hi Harmonay,

It sounds like you don't get too much support from home which will make things a little harder for you. Some diets are bad for teenagers, if you try to restrict your calories too much or starve yourself or go on faddy diets these may be bad for anybody not just teenagers. Teenagers are still growing and need to have a good healthy diet to ensure they continue to grow anddevelop properly. You should not be thinking about dieting but adopting a healthy eating pattern and lifestyle.

Looking at your current eating habbits there are things that you can do. Firstly do ensure that you have breakfast. This will help stop you craving those sugar fixes at lunch time. Have a bowl of cereal or some toast which is quick and easy to prepare. Also why not take sandwiches into school and buy an apple or other fruit with your money? Low fat yoghurts are good as this will give you your calcium needed for strong bones. How good are your cooking skills? If you have a microwave baked potatoes are easy and healthy you could perhaps have some tuna with it and a salad so not too much cooking involved. Have another chat with your mum and tell her about your concerns. You mention you have brothers, hows their health? I they too overweight? Perhaps you can persuade your mum to change the eating habits of the whole family as it can't be good for any of you. Best of luck with this and I hope you stop feeling miserable soon.

Thank you MrsB, that is good advice and I will speak to my mum again. I have two younger brothers and they are both fat too. Things have gotten worse since my Dad left as mum has to go out to work in the evenings and don't have time to cook. I don't blame my mum as she works very hard. She cleans in the morning, is a dinner lady and also has two cleaing jobs at night. I'll ask her if she can show me how to cook some proper meals and then I can cook them for me brothers when she is out. I'm fed up with being called names and I no me brothers are bullied too. Thank you Mrs B

Good advice from MrsB, perhaps finding new recipes and ways of healthy eating without too much trouble, can be something you and your mum could do together. If you have a freezer, you can cook lots of things at the weekends that just need popping in the microwave in the week.

Good Luck
