I wouldn't weigh yourself more than once a month myself. If you are really trying and going for it then it will happen and it's only a question of perseverance and sticking at it.
I remember before i used to drink loads of water in the summer months i used to lose half a stone in two weeks and cycling back from 2hrs karate took an hour and i used to be over a 16 pounds lighter. So often it's the body adapting and/or water intake and you mustn't let your motivation take a rollercoaster ride simply because the scales dictate you mood weather they are a pound up or down. It will happen.

As for light weight vs heavy. Heavy weights are where you can only do 10 repetitions before you just can't push it any more. Your muscles have reached failure point in that moment.
Light weight some would say is anything above 25 reps. Personally i still (once and a while) pick up a light 5Ib dumbell and just do some raises or curls for 20mins or more. That's probably 100's of reps but that's ok. You certainly won't be pulling any major tendons with that kind of weight and it's burning calories and getting the muscles used to doing something!
