I'm giving up! Please support me. D Day on Monday next

Hi everyone

I'm a regular poster over on CAG and some of you may recognise me.

Last night I watched "Tonight" with Trevor McDonald, it was all about Liz Dawn, the lovely actress who played Vera Duckworth in Coronation Street and her battle with ill health due to smoking. Nothing about giving up smoking has ever affected me more than that programme, and afterwards I broke down in tears and I am now determined to give up. I'm not a heavy smoker but I shouldn't be smoking ANY due to other health problems, so after I had watched the show I rang the NHS quit smoking line and am registered to begin my non-smoking journey next Monday....please wish me luck!!

Love SG x

Good luck. I had a relative die from ephysema so can appreciate how upsetting that programme may have been for you. Although i'm really glad I didn't see it as I like Liz Dawn and think it may have upset me too.

Congratulations on making the decision

Hi Spiritgirl, did you make a start? Let us know how you're doing. I've just done three days and determined to give up but the cravings are driving me made.

Well hello again friends ((((hugs))))

I've not been avoiding you all - I've not been able to get back on here since I first posted, and I'm having trouble again at the moment .... keep getting weird error messages, and I can't use any emoticons waaaah :-(

Anyhow the good news is I DID give up on 11th Feb and have not had a cig since! I'm now into week 4 and thankfully the worst seems to be over. Between the end of week 1 and the middle of week 2 I suffered with horrendous headaches and dizziness. I also ended up in hospital the weekend before last because of chest pains - and was kept in while they checked for a heart attack! All tests came back OK and they still don't know what caused it. They reckon either a very bad panic attack (cos I do suffer from those) or it was my chest healing itself after all the fags and the muscles going into spasm or something...anyway it was pretty scary!

I can't take some of the NRT due to my high blood pressure problems so its been cold turkey all the way. I did have some inhalators but the taste was so disgusting I didn't bother after the first one. I found having a glass of water helped when I got a craving, or sticking my head out of the door and taking some deep breaths.

The GOOD news (LOL it all sounds negative so far) is that my BP has now gone down lower than its been for years! OK I am still on treatment at the moment but fingers crossed I may be able to come off it at some point in the future. Food tastes terrific - and best of all I have saved over £100 so far! Quitline told me to get a jar and put the cash in each week, then put the jar away and forget about it till the next week - let the money build up, its a great incentive which it is!

So GOOD LUCK to you all, and thanks to everyone who posted on my thread - you must have thought I was well rude not getting back to you but I DID try lots of times. Thanks to Brassed Off for the pm's and support!

I'll pop back again soon!

Love SG x

Well done SG thats a marvellous achievement I bet your so glad you've done it and over the worse now. I'm looking forward to the day when I can say i've been 4 weeks. Looks like you've had a dreadful time of things but its well worth it.

I do hope they get this site sorted out soon its well annoying having all the fatal errors and not being able to do smilies properly!

Take care and best wishes

Xan xx
