How awful dxs,

I think some people forget just how devasting such conditions are on the persons involved and also those around them. It looks like you are starting to come to terms with and understand your condition which is half the battle. Hope things get better for you.

Demon, I have suffered from anxiety for years - I had my first panic attack two days after my dad died when I was 13 (nearly 18 yars ago) but suffered from other anxiety symptoms due to things that happened when I was small.

You do eventually (and I mean eventually) learn how to cope with it.

The best way I've found? Not to deny your anxiety. If you do, you become anxious about being anxious. Once you let yourself go into it, even in a room full of strangers, and say "I'm sorry, I'm having a panic attack" it's amazing how much more in control you become. I learned it was a vicious circle - you start panicking because you panic you will panic in a situation you shouldn't panic in (if you see what I mean).

When you openly admit you are having a panic attack (or anxiety attack, however you prefer to refer to it) it's amazing how many people around you understand and will admit to you their own panic attacks. It's common - it just appears to be a dirty secret.

It's very liberating 9and sets you on the road to recovery) when you can announce what's hapening and not be ashamed of it. afterall, you wouldn't be ashamed of a broken leg, would you?

Syphillis on the other hand ...

GUIDE TO TREATMENT

Anxiety disorders are real, serious, and treatable. Experts believe that anxiety disorders are caused by a combination of biological and environmental factors, much like other disorders, such as heart disease and diabetes.

The vast majority of people with an anxiety disorder can be helped with professional care. Success of treatment varies among people. Some may respond to treatment after a few months, while others may need more than a year. Treatment is sometimes complicated by the fact that people very often have more than one anxiety disorder or suffer from depression or substance abuse. This is why treatment must be tailored to the individual.

Although treatment is individualized, several standard approaches have proved effective. Therapists will use one or a combination of these therapies.
